Safe Wisconsin Produce is a Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) program to adopt federal food safety regulations in a manner that makes sense for our state’s produce growers to ensure the safety and wholesomeness of food produced in Wisconsin.
DATCP, through a cooperative agreement with the FDA, is responsible for enforcing the Produce Safety Rule in Wisconsin. DATCP is in the process of training and hiring inspectors that will be responsible for inspecting Wisconsin farms. Inspections began in 2019.
On-Farm Readiness Reviews (OFRRs) are offered to produce growers interested in assessing their readiness for a produce safety inspection. Reviews are conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection in partnership with members of the UW-Extension Produce Safety Team who have completed OFRR training.
Growers interested in an OFFR should call the DATCP Division of Food and Recreational Safety general inquiries number (608) 224-4511.
